6 differences between Buhari's real UN talk and fake one being circulated

The 72nd session of the United Nations General Assembly is currently ongoing with world leaders addressing their counterparts and other participants.

President Muhammadu Buhari spoke at the event on Tuesday, September 19 around 4.43pm Nigerian time. GO VIRAL NAIJA covered the speech of the president.

However, six hours earlier, a fake copy of the speech had been circulated online and published by even news media expected to be reputable.

After the President's speech was delivered, his media spokesperson, Mr Femi Adesina published the real speech on his official Facebook page.

Below are some differences between the real speech and the fake speech:

1. Restructuring

In the fake speech, President Buhari reportedly spoke on restructuring of the United Nations and improving representation of Africans in official positions. However in the real speech, all he said was:

"......will require strong UN cooperation with regional organisations, such as the African Union, in conflict prevention and management.

"The UN should continue to take primary leadership of the maintenance of international peace and security by providing, in a predictable and sustainable manner, adequate funding and other enablers to regional initiatives and peacekeeping operations authorized by the security council."

2. Post colonialism

In the fake speech, President Buhari said:

"We cannot continue to pretend that conflicts that emerged as a result of our colonial heritage have been resolved. Across our continent, they are still there.

In some cases, bad governance is exacerbating these conflict points."However, there is no mention of the post colonial experience in the real speech.

3. African prosperity

In the fake speech, President Buhari mentions the material prosperity of Africa. However in the real speech, all he said was: "......state institutions are being strengthened to promote accountability, and to combat corruption and asset recovery. These can only be achieved through the international community cooperating and providing critical assistance and material support."

4. Boko Haram

In the real speech the president thanked the international community for their help with the Boko Haram insurgency, however in the fake speech, it was written thus:

"In Nigeria, we have degraded the capability of the Boko Haram terrorist group.

"We are on the path to eliminating the last of their safe heavens.

We have also secured the release of some of our abducted Chibok Girls. We are working hard to secure the release of the rest and to finish the job.

5. Nuclear war

In the fake speech, the president reportedly said:

"In the urgent matter of the nuclear stand off with North Korea, we hope that calm heads prevail. And as our ancestors say, that the disobedient fowl does not wait to be put into a pot of soup before it obeys. We in Africa hope that North Korea and, indeed, all the nations with nuclear weapons will hasten to eliminate them all.

"We don’t aspire to have nuclear weapons in the continent of Africa, the cradle of mankind. We will preserve Africa in case the nuclear-armed nations of the world decide to destroy themselves in their so-called mutual assured destruction.

"However, what he really said was:

"All necessary pressure and diplomatic efforts must be brought to bear on North Korea to accept peaceful resolution of the crisis.

As Hiroshima and Nagasaki painfully remind us, if we fail, the catastrophic and devastating human loss and environmental degradation cannot be imagined. "

Mr President, Nigeria proposes a strong UN delegation to urgently engage the North Korean Leader. The delegation, led by the Security Council, should include members from all the regions."

6. Palestine

In the fake speech, he said this about Palestine:

"Any glaring unfairness, like the Palestinian case, diminishes our moral authority to preach and lecture the world on other cases. "As we have learned in Nigeria, our stubborn self-righteousness blocks our ears from hearing the cry of those that we left on the fringe of society and blocks our eyes from seeing and reading the handwriting on the wall."

However, in the real speech there is no mention of this. All the president said was:

"New conflicts should not make us lose focus on ongoing unresolved old conflicts. "For example, several UN Security Council Resolutions from 1967 on the Middle East crisis remain unimplemented. Meanwhile, the suffering of the Palestinian people and the blockade of Gaza continue."

Meanwhile, in his real speech, Buhari also reminds about suffering population of Yemen and Myanmar. "As Hiroshima and Nagasaki painfully remind us, if we fail, the catastrophic human loss and environmental degradation cannot be imagined."
